Physical Education

Teachers provide a challenging physical education class in which students are required to exercise an average of one hour to an hour and a half each day. These efforts help promote positive self-image, personal development, social development as well as movement skills and knowledge. Students develop effective motor skills and understand the fundamentals of movement by practicing purposeful movements. They engage in motor skills practice involving development of both locomotor and nonlocomotor skills, and gain an understanding of the qualities of time, space, force, and flow applicable to those skills. In addition, emphasis is placed on object manipulation, such as catching, throwing, kicking, and juggling. Students learn to develop appropriate social behaviors by working independently and with others during planned physical activity. On Monday and Fridays, our students participate in team sports, including basketball, soccer, and kickball. On Tuesday and Thursdays, students swim at the local Cameron Family YMCA. Wednesday’s activities include running and coordination drills. All activities emphasize the importance of hard work, teamwork and flexibility. Every six months, we hold the Presidential Fitness Challenge which all parents are invited to attend. In addition, we have created an "Iron-Person Award", in which the student swims 120 laps in addition to the Presidential Fitness Challenge. RESCU has access to a wide variety of community venues for physical education, such as, but not limited to, the YMCA, Mast Park, Santee Lakes, Mission Trails Park, Grossmont Community College athletics facilities, West Hills Park, Cowles Mountain, and the La Jolla Cove.
