Students receive academic course credit for their on-going participation in Student Support Life Management Seminar (Group). Group is a life changing academic course that is rooted in recovery, utilizing small group theory. Group is a powerful venue for growth and change. With the direction of a RESCU Academy Executive director, students are encouraged to be open and free to discuss issues within the group process where respect exists between their peers and staff. They are able to discuss age-appropriate issues that are pertinent to themselves in a safe and comfortable environment in which members work to establish a level of trust that allows them to talk personally and honestly. Not only do students receive tremendous understanding, support, and positive peer pressure from others facing similar issues, but they also gain different perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints on those issues. Students are encouraged to give feedback to others. Feedback includes expressing your own feelings about what someone says or does, discussing the impacts of their behavior and possible consequences for their decisions. Interaction between group students are highly encouraged and provides each student with an opportunity to try out new ways of behaving; it also provides members with an opportunity for learning more about the way they interact with others. Group members make a commitment to the group and are instructed that the content of the group sessions are held within only current RESCU Academy families. Students learn to be accountable for their actions and learn how to be responsible for decisions they have made in their lives. All students participate in this daily Group meeting to influence, support, and promote the recovery of their peer members and themselves. Most students, though somewhat apprehensive at first, report that the group process was helpful far beyond their expectations.
